Ugly Kitchen Contest Winner: Before & After

… A Drastic Transformation!

sharpened

What a privilege it was to get the chance to help out this special family! Lisa Bittner was one of dozens of contestants who entered our Spring 2019 Ugly Kitchen Contest for a chance to win a free kitchen makeover (valued up to $25k). Lisa, along with her husband and two kids, were living and cooking in a 1966 unfunctional kitchen. The layout consisted of a “double kitchen” which split the room in half, creating more obstacles than desired and limited space.

Lisa’s oldest son has Sanfilippo Syndrome which prevents him from understanding safety. Therefore, it was crucial that this kitchen be completely remodeled. Our team of experts at IDC decided to completely tear up the existing layout and start over from scratch.

There were several pass-throughs from the kitchen that led to the other areas of the home. Too many, if we’re being honest. An opening near the fridge, another near the stove, and one across the main wall. One opening was an immediate entrance to a downward staircase, which was ultimately blocked off with a cardboard cutout by Lisa’s husband due to the major safety hazard at hand. Because this was of much concern, it was decided to completely close off this stairway access, and instead, fill the wall with much-needed storage space. The remaining two openings still give access to the remainder of the house (including downstairs).

We knocked down the dividing sector of the kitchen to make it one cohesive and open space. This room finally allows Lisa’s son the ability to freely roam without barriers in his way.

Prior to the renovation process, the refrigerator and oven were beside each other in a consolidated corner. When the oven was in use, it would cause the freezer to run. Talk about an energy waste! This was something our team knew needed to be addressed in the new kitchen layout. An incompetent design plus inefficient use of energy is not a good combination.

The kitchen that was once a dreaded room in the home quickly became a place where this family could feel excited, but more importantly, safe. IDC is so grateful to have met Lisa and her beautiful family and to have had the opportunity to be a part of such a huge and much needed transformation to their home.
