What are Solid Surface Countertops Made of?

We believe that it is very important to learn about the advantages you will be benefitting from if you choose to invest in solid surface countertops. But before we start, we’d like to provide you with a little background information about solid surfaces and what they are. This trend countertop material is manufactured and typically used for seamless countertop installs. Many people around the world refer to it as Corian which is a product that DuPont developed in 1964. A solid surface is a material that can be cut, routed, & sanded (like wood). It is then used to create shower walls and countertops.

This very trendy material is made of polyester resin, acrylic resin, or a combination of both. Then, it is combined altogether using filler, acrylic chips, and color pigments. This unique composition is poured or extruded as half an inch of thick sheets that run 30 by 144 inches. Additionally, solid surface countertops can be thermoformed and heated into molded and curved shapes.

Benefits of Solid Surfaces

This is the part we all like, the advantages! So, let’s dive in! There are many benefits to keep in mind when it comes to a solid surface. It can be a great addition to any kitchen in America and sometimes homeowners will also want them installed in their bathrooms. This is an efficient countertop that will land you plenty of compliments. Follow along to learn what a solid surface has to offer.

Stain Resistance

Yes, there are a few countertop materials that are stain resistant. However, one great advantage of solid surfaces have is the fact that you can scrub and wipe away most stains. Other countertop materials can permanently be marred by blueberries, grease, lipstick or makeup, shoe polish, and much more. All of the following elements can easily be removed from a solid surface by using an abrasive cleaner or water.

Anti-microbial

Solid surface counters are also mildew, mold, and bacteria resistant. This is a huge plus because it means that you will not have to worry about bacteria growth. Furthermore, this great quality makes it a phenomenal choice for all healthcare settings such as hospices, gyms, doctors offices, hospitals, as well as retirement homes. They also make great countertops in kitchen and bathrooms, areas in the home where germs can thrive.

Easy to Repair

Easily repairable? That is correct! Not only are these countertops stain resistant but they are also quite easy to repair. So, if at any moment they get damaged with chips, cracks, gouges, or scratches, they can, in fact, get repaired. All it takes is light sanding. This will remove any scorches from hot pots or cigarettes, small chips, and scratches. However, if your solid surface countertops suffered from gouges and cracks then you will need to contact a local solid surface countertop repairman.

Thermoformable

A thermoformable countertop can easily get heated up and bent into shapes and curves. Recently, the countertop industry has started leveraging its ability to become pliable when it is heated anywhere from 300 to 350 degrees. Once this temperature is reached, the solid surface will resemble a lasagna noodle. Once you drape the countertop it will take on the shape and retain it once it cools down in temperature.

Invisible Seams

Regardless of the countertop material, large surfaces may require seams. The seams are not invisible or hard to detect on a solid surface. Ultimately, this means that this is good for eliminating a place for crumbs and for the aesthetic of the countertop. There will also be no place for stains, dirt, pathogens, and other microorganisms to get into.

No Raised Grain or Shrinkage Cracks

Solid surfaces are more dimensionally stable than wood. You can count on seeing the grain rise in unfinished wood anytime it absorbs moisture or gets wet. Unfortunately, even finished wood may dry out and eventually crack. On the other hand, solid surfaces may expand slightly, but they will not crack and or absorb moisture.

Printable

Not many people know this but solid surface countertops are printable. This means that text and images can be transferred on to the surface. Dye sublimation will allow the transfer of text and images to be embedded onto the countertop. This process requires the heating of the material and the ink transfer to the countertop under a vacuum condition.

Following, the text and images are then affixed into the pores of the countertop, permanently. Once this occurs, the countertop can be thermoformed, fabricated, and sanded or cleaned.

Variety

You can find a large assortment of patterns, colors, and designs when you choose solid surfaces. This quality countertop is offered in infinite solid colors like small multi-colored particulates of sand embedded grains in the sheets. They also come in large particulates like those in granite stone. Other particulates will come randomly veined, swirled, variegated, and much more.

The patterns you will find are typically a direct result of nature-inspired designs. However, sometimes the patterns will be whimsical and not resemble nature at all. Some designs will have metal shavings and strands or swirls of other materials. You could even have a custom color made to fit your unique style.

Is Painting & Sealing Required?

It is no secret that most people would prefer a countertop they don’t have to reseal or paint. Painting and resealing can be a burden for most which is why solid surfaces are an ideal choice. Unlike with natural stones, you will not have to reseal your solid surface every 6 months.

You also do not have to stress out about grease leaking and staining your countertop permanently when you don’t. Once the surface becomes aged or dingy, you can easily fix the surface with a cleaner. You’ll just have to scrub and wipe your countertops instead of resurfacing or repainting. There will also be no need for the application of a finish, sanding, or an additional coat.

A Top Consumer Choice

Finally, solid surfaces are a top consumer choice and have been since they first made it on the market. They are perfect for commercial and residential properties so their function is not limited to one or the other.
