7 Questions to Ask a Prospective Contractor
Kitchen and bathroom remodels are big tasks that need to be done right and in a timely manner. Don’t get stuck with a bad contractor. Do your research.
To help you out, we’ve put together a list of 7 common questions we think every responsible homeowner should ask prospective contractors before choosing to hire them.
How long have you been in business?
Find out what experience they have with this type of home remodeling project. Are they licensed and insured? Ask for referrals and credentials. Don’t stop there. Actually look into those referrals and credentials.
What is the timeline?
Having a timeline is everything in kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling projects. We’re not just talking about rough start and end dates. We’re talking about an outline for all tasks. When is tile expected to be installed, when will countertops be installed, etc.?
How will we communicate?
Find out how you will be communicating, via phone calls, texts, emails, or in person and how often. It is also important to find out how the contractor will be reached after hours and how they will let you know if you need to make a decision.
How will my home and items in it be protected?
Find out who will be responsible for opening and closing up your home each day and how your appliances, paintings, drapes, etc. will be protected from debris during the remodeling process.
Ask who will be supervising the contractors.
Talk with the supervisor and find out what part of your remodeling project concerns him or her, if any. Usually your contractor will already be able to tell you what that concern is. Talking about concerns beforehand prepares you for what to expect later down the road and the best way to handle it.
What kind of documentation will there be?
Will there be a written and signed contract? What will happen if there is a change order, and what kind of documentation will you receive when the project is complete?
Will you itemize your bid?
This will allow you to see any hidden costs. Be sure to ask whom their main suppliers are for the items listed in your bid.
