Green Kitchen Design
Written by
Tricia Wieland
Yes, it’s true. The avocado green kitchen is showing up again on the runways of kitchen design trends, but this designer is isn’t here to talk design from the 1970’s. The latest trend in kitchen design is an environmentally healthy “green” kitchen.
The kitchen of today isn’t simply for cook meals. It has become the meeting place for the family and a gathering space for parties. Simply stated, it’s the busiest room in your home. Because we spend so much time this room we need to be aware of the impact it has on the environment from air quality, to water use and energy consumption.
Most homeowners are unaware of how easy it is to 'go green' in the kitchen. Here are a few things to consider when designing your next green kitchen.
Some great options for your countertops include concrete, granite and quartz. Because large amounts of energy are required for transport, look for locally mined and fabricated stone (within 1000 miles).
Look for cabinets made up of all or part recycled materials. Most companies today use low-emitting materials, such as composite wood, in their cabinets help protect the air quality in your home. In fact, the paint on your walls emits more toxins than most cabinets. The key is to find a cabinet that meets your needs and is healthy for your indoor environment.
Appliances & Fixtures
Energy efficient appliances save on your monthly energy bills. You can check out the Energy Star website (www.energystar.gov) for ratings on appliances. Kitchen fixtures vary greatly in the amount of water consumption and flow rates. Consider your lifestyle and choose the fixture that meets your needs while conserving natural resources.
Stone, bamboo, cork, porcelain, glass and concrete tiles are all great choices when considering environmental impact. And, many of these materials in highly desired by designers all around the world.
Backsplash
A kitchen backsplash can be the finishing touch to a successful kitchen design. There are many different environmentally friendly backsplash materials including porcelain, stone, glass, concrete and metal. Consider a combination of materials to add interest and uniqueness to your design.
